First of all, whatever else you do, you do not want to go running around town, hoping to “accidentally” bump into your ex; you know where they hang out, and they know you know, so you’re not going to fool anybody, and your ex may feel like you’re stalking them.

Whether the breakup was rough on both of you, or seemed to be pretty smooth and easy on the surface, you really going to have to give both yourself and your ex time to cool off before you try to make up with them and win them back.

Start by taking yourself right out of the drama. Distract yourself with other things. Although this may seem like you’re avoiding dealing with it, it’s really the best thing: you can’t make calm or rational decisions when you’re still stinging from the breakup, and neither can your ex.

So take a class, take a trip, go to the gym and get some of that frustration out! Anything that will get you up off your butt where you’ve been sitting, feeling sorry for yourself (or being p***ed off at your ex) because of the breakup. I can guarantee you that doing either one of those things (feeling sorry for yourself or holding a grudge) is the best way to screw this up permanently.

While you’re taking your time out, think about what went wrong, and especially the role you played in the breakup. You’ll never get anywhere if you blame your ex for what happened and refuse to recognize your own role in it: it takes two to tango.

Once you’ve gotten to the point of admitting to yourself that you played a part in the breakup, you’re miles closer to answering the question, “how do I get my ex back?” Because once you start to take responsibility for your own role in the breakup, you can start to take responsibility for changing your behavior in the future, and make sure that whatever you did wrong won’t happen again.
